It's hard to picture anyone dancing to the music of
Psyche although the duo plays tonight at 8:30
p.m. in Level 21, a small dance club located
upstairs in the Mayfair Hotel. Admission is $2 at
the door. Psyche will also perform in The Turret at
Wilfrid Laurier University on Feb. 12.
The band's two members are young local
musicians who go by the names Evan Panic and
Anthony Red although their real names are Darrin
and Stephen. They have released a couple of
independent singles and an album called
Insomnia Theatre which they say has sold about
5,000 copies, mostly in Europe.
Consisting mainly of weird and jangly electronics
and vocals, Psyche's music is almost horrifying in
its intensity. In particular, the lyrics to songs like
Mr. Eyeball Ooze, Maggots and Children Carry
Knives seem intended only to disgust the listener.
The sound is definitely not the dance-inducing
type of electronic music that dominates today's
radio and I suppose that's the point.
